International Technology Roadmap for Compound Semiconductors (ITRCS) Bulletin Board
Has the compound semiconductor industry reached a crossroads? Does it need a strategy similar to the international "roadmap" that has profoundly benefited the silicon semiconductor industry, which has grown an average of 15% annually over the past four decades? This trend can be attributed in part to consensus-based planning and deliberate roadmapping efforts.
The acknowledged success of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors for silicon raises some obvious questions: Is now the right time for the compound semiconductor community to undertake an analogous roadmapping challenge? Do we need an International Technology Roadmap for Compound Semiconductors, or ITRCS? Who will take the responsibility to create and maintain the ITRCS?
Realizing that there are opinions ranging from "the need is critical" to "there is no need," our Semiconductor Electronics Division of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Laboratory posed such questions as the above in two recent articles, one in the IEEE Spectrum Article1 and the other in the Compound Semiconductor magazine Article2*.
